Draft resolution, Albanian Parliament declares Iran a terrorist state

The Albanian Parliament is expected to adopt a resolution "declaring the Islamic Republic of Iran a State Sponsor of Terrorism and a State that uses terrorist means."
According to the document published on the Parliament's website on Monday, the decision is based on international data on "the financing, training, arming and directing of non-state armed groups and organizations declared as terrorist entities in several regions", as well as on the destabilizing behavior of this republic in the Middle East.
The document also offers as another reason the fact that Albania has been the target of Iranian cyberattacks in the past and present, after a new cyberattack by the self-proclaimed "Homeland Justice" group linked to Iran hit the digital infrastructure of the Parliament.
According to the draft resolution, Albania "has itself been the subject of hostile actions in cyberspace, including the serious cyberattack on Albanian state institutions in 2022, attributed to structures linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as the attempts in recent days to carry out cyberattacks on the systems of the Albanian Parliament."
Through this document, which is expected to be approved in the coming days in parliament, the Albanian state 'condemns' Iran's support for acts of terrorism, hybrid operations and destabilizing activities in various regions of the world, and expresses full solidarity with friendly countries in the Persian Gulf and with Turkey, which have been targeted by terrorist activity sponsored by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
It also condemns "the activities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated entities for their role in supporting terrorist organizations, proxy armed forces, and destabilizing operations."
In this spirit, the draft resolution calls on the Albanian government to immediately declare the IRGC a terrorist organization and also declare Hezbollah a 'proxy' terrorist organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
With this stance, the Albanian state joins the United States of America, Germany, the Netherlands and a number of EU member states, as well as other countries, which have taken these steps earlier.
Relations between Albania and Iran have been tense for years due to the Albanian government's decision to shelter as refugees several thousand mujahideen, part of the opposition organization, MEK.
The Mujahedin were relocated to Albania with the mediation of the United States of America.
In the summer of 2022, Albanian institutions fell prey to a massive cyberattack, which threatened to paralyze public services, wipe out systems, and steal state data.
According to an official position of the Albanian government, the investigation conducted in cooperation with specialized partner digital anti-terrorism agencies revealed that the attack was a state aggression, sponsored by Iran./Reporter.al
