Where does our country rank among global investors? From the US to China, who dominates the world? Albania, in 73rd place
The United States, Japan, and China continue to dominate global foreign direct investment. These three economies alone invested over $630 billion abroad in 2024, and together with Luxembourg, Hong Kong, and Canada, they generate more than half of the world's foreign direct investment.
In this global ranking carried out by "Visual Capitalist" based on data from the "UNCTAD World Investment Report 2025", Albania is positioned in 73rd place, with 261 million dollars of outbound investments, being one of the economies with a modest weight as a capital exporter. Compared to the Western Balkan countries, Albania ranks in the middle of the table. Serbia leads the region with 656 million dollars of investments abroad. After it comes our country with 261 million dollars, while North Macedonia ranks behind it with 181 million dollars. Montenegro recorded 68 million dollars, while Bosnia and Herzegovina 66 million dollars of outbound investments.
These figures show that, although the Albanian economy has expanded its presence abroad in recent years, it remains far behind countries that export capital on a large scale and behind Serbia in the region.
How many of the world's largest investors are present in Albania?
Interestingly, although Albania ranks only 73rd in the world for investments made by Albanian companies abroad, some of the world's largest investing economies have built a significant presence in the country. Bank of Albania data for the last quarter of 2025 show that the stock of foreign direct investment has reached nearly 17 billion euros, dominated by European investors, but also some of the largest global sources of capital.
The Netherlands leads with an investment stock of 2.76 billion euros, followed by Switzerland with 2.35 billion euros, Canada with 2.06 billion euros and Italy with 1.89 billion euros. Next are Turkey with 1.41 billion euros, Austria with 927 million euros, Bulgaria with 897 million euros, France with 612 million euros, Germany with 591 million euros and Kosovo with 584 million euros. The US, the largest source of investment in the world, has a stock of around 435 million euros in the Albanian economy.
This means that, although Albania is not a major exporter of capital in the international arena, it has managed to attract long-term investments from some of the world's most powerful economies. However, the stock structure shows that the main weight remains with European and regional capital, while investments from Asian economies that dominate global flows, such as Japan and China, continue to be minimal.
An economy that is more capital-receiving than capital-exporting
The United Nations’ ranking in the World Investment 2025 report shows that Albania continues to be an economy that receives more investment than it exports capital abroad. While inflows have reached record levels in recent years, Albanian investments abroad remain modest compared to developed economies and even some countries in the region. At the same time, the structure of investments in Albania shows that the country remains mainly linked to European and Balkan capital, while the presence of global investment giants is still limited./ SCAN
