Japan snap elections: Prime Minister Takaichi on course for convincing victory

Japan's prime minister is set to take more power after a recent exit poll showed her with a large majority in the country's lower house.

Sanae Takaichi's coalition is expected to win between 302 and 366 seats out of 465 in the chamber, national broadcaster NHK has predicted.

This is far more than the 233 votes needed for a majority.

This comes after she announced a rare snap winter election, seeking to capitalize on her high approval ratings.

Takaichi, 64, became Japan's first female prime minister in October after taking the helm of the struggling Liberal Democratic Party, whose transformation of fortunes is credited to her.

The former heavy metal drummer says her country is suffering from "foreigner fatigue" due to immigration and tourism and has increased tensions with China.

The lower house, or House of Representatives, is the stronger of the two chambers that make up the parliamentary system in Japan.
