Eyes of the world on the Strait of Hormuz, UN creates working group to address

UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric has given an update on the Organization's efforts to address disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the situation could affect humanitarian needs and agricultural production in the coming months.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has set up a task force to facilitate the trade in fertilizers and the movement of raw materials, among other things. According to Dujarric, the UN's goals do not include the movement of crude oil, focusing primarily on humanitarian and food needs.

Dujarric stressed that the UN has extensive experience in developing such mechanisms in conflict zones, citing cases such as Ukraine and the Black Sea Grain Initiative, but added that it is not yet clear how the situation in the Strait will develop.

Guterres has held intensive consultations over the past two days with senior officials, including the foreign ministers of Iran, Egypt and Pakistan, as well as the US and Bahraini ambassadors to the UN, to find ways to protect trade and stability in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key strategic point for global trade, and recent disruptions have raised concerns about potential effects on the global supply of food and raw materials.
