The death toll from the tragic fire in Cans Montana rises to 41, the 18-year-old did not survive the fire injuries

A teenager injured in a fire that engulfed Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana during New Year's celebrations has died in hospital, raising the death toll to 41.
The public prosecutor of the canton of Wallis, Beatrice Pilloud, stated: “An 18-year-old Swiss citizen died in a hospital in Zurich on January 31. The death toll from the fire in the bar 'Le Constellation' on January 1, 2026 has now risen to 41.”
Most of the victims were teenagers, aged between 14 and 39, while only four people were over 24. Among them are 23 Swiss (including a person with dual French-Swiss nationality) and 18 foreigners: 8 French (including a girl with triple nationalities: French-British-Israeli), 6 Italians (including a person with dual Italian-Emirati nationality), and one person each from Belgium, Portugal, Romania and Turkey.
Authorities suspect the fire started when revellers set off champagne with fireworks too close to the soundproofing bricks in the bar's basement ceiling.
Four people are under criminal investigation: the co-owners of the bar, the head of public safety of the municipality of Crans-Montana and a former fire safety officer.
After the tragedy, patients with serious injuries were transported by helicopter to hospitals and burn centers in Switzerland and four other European countries. According to the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Protection, 44 patients were being treated abroad: 18 in France, 12 in Italy, 8 in Germany and 6 in Belgium. Meanwhile, 37 patients remain in Swiss hospitals.
The situation is fluid, with patients moving for different treatments and some being readmitted to hospital, including intensive care.
