Protests escalate in Greece/Farmers attempt blockade at airport intersection, clash with police

Farmers from Eastern Thessaloniki and Halkidiki attempted today to set up a new blockade at the intersection leading to Macedonia Airport, using tractors and other agricultural equipment. Their movement was stopped by police forces, causing tension and moments of panic.
According to reports, a group of farmers attempted to cross the territory of the Aristotle University farm to reach the intersection. Police responded by using chemicals and tear gas to disperse them, leading to chaotic scenes with protesters running to protect themselves from the effects of the gas.
ELAS had warned from the beginning of its determination not to allow the strategic axis of the airport to be blocked. A barrier reinforced with cages had been erected in front of the intersection, while the police instructed drivers to use the Thessaloniki-Poligyros road to enter or exit the airport.
Tractors from Galatista and Nea Triglia in Halkidiki also joined the protest, increasing the number of participants. Farmers have predicted that participation will increase during the day and on weekends.
In the coming hours, farmer representatives are expected to hold a meeting to determine the next steps of the protest.
