NASA warning: Parts of a satellite will fall to Earth today

NASA and the U.S. Space Force warn that parts of a large satellite, Van Allen Probe A, will reenter Earth's atmosphere Tuesday evening at around 7:45 p.m. EDT.

According to foreign media, the satellite weighs about 600 kg and most of it will burn up during reentry, but some parts may survive.

The chances of someone being injured by falling debris are very small: 1 in 4,200. About 71% of the Earth is water, which further reduces the chance of impact for humans.

Falling debris from space is not rare, but only one person has been hit in recent years, Lottie Williams of Oklahoma in 1997, without being injured.

The satellite was part of a mission to study the Van Allen belts of charged particles in Earth's magnetic fields.

It was deactivated in 2019 when it ran out of fuel and could no longer be controlled. Its twin is not expected to return before the end of this decade.
