Nearly two weeks after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held his first press conference on Thursday regarding the new offensive.
During the statement, given to Israeli journalists via Zoom, Netanyahu spoke about the weakening of the regime in Tehran and the new front opened against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"We are destroying the regime of terror in Iran. We are striking and defeating its representatives, including Hezbollah in Lebanon," he declared.
Regarding the possibility of regime change in Iran, Netanyahu said that Israel and the US are working to create the conditions for the Iranian people to overthrow the regime themselves, which, according to him, has oppressed the country for nearly 50 years.
"We are working to create the conditions for Iranians to oust this barbaric regime. We are approaching the moment when they will gain their freedom ," he said.
According to the Israeli prime minister, Israel is inflicting "devastating blows" on the Revolutionary Guard, striking their bases, forces and checkpoints.
"I say to the Iranian people: the moment when you will be able to embark on a new path of freedom is approaching. We are at your side and we are helping you, but in the end it all depends on you," Netanyahu said.
He added that he had promised to change the balance of power in the Middle East and that Israel would emerge stronger than ever. “ Now everyone accepts this, both our friends and our enemies ,” he declared.
Asked whether Israel is arming opposition groups in Iran, Netanyahu said that the overthrow of the regime cannot happen without the efforts of the Iranian people themselves.
"I can't tell you what will happen in the end. If the regime doesn't fall, it will be much weaker. But if it does fall, the problem will be solved ," he stressed.
According to him, if Israel and the US had not acted immediately, within a few months Iran's military industry would have become invulnerable to any attack.
"We entered this battle to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that would threaten Israel, the United States and the entire world ," Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu also mentioned Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
"We eliminated the old tyrant ," he said of Ali Khamenei, adding that the new leader is a "puppet of the Revolutionary Guard" and cannot appear publicly.
He even threatened her directly: "If I were an insurer, I wouldn't give her life insurance."
Netanyahu also warned that there could be "other surprises," stressing that Israel has more of an advantage than it expected and will achieve all of its objectives.
Regarding Hezbollah in Lebanon, Netanyahu stated that the organization will pay "a very heavy price" for its actions.
He added that Israel has sent a clear message to the Lebanese government: if it continues to allow Hezbollah to operate without disarming, then it is "playing with fire."
"If they don't act, we will," Netanyahu warned, without giving details on whether this would happen through ground operations or other methods.
In conclusion, he emphasized that cooperation between Israel and the US has brought about "major achievements that are changing the balance of power in the Middle East and beyond."
