Macron responds to Trump's call: France ready to join ship escort in the Strait of Hormuz, but...

France is ready to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, but only after the situation has become "calmer," President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.

"We are not a party to the conflict and for this reason France will never participate in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context," Macron said after US President Donald Trump's request that allies help secure the waterway effectively closed by Iran in response to US-Israeli attacks.

"However, we are convinced that as soon as the situation calms down... we are ready, together with other nations, to take responsibility for a system of accompaniment," he said.
