Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, arrested in Iran, is released

Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested on December 19 in Iran for "violating the laws" of the Islamic Republic, has been released and is returning to her country, the Italian government announced today.

"Our compatriot was released by the Iranian authorities and is returning to Italy," the Italian government clarified in a statement. "The plane on which journalist Cecilia Sala is repatriating took off a few minutes ago," the announcement states.

Sala, 29, who works for Il Foglio newspaper and podcast website Chora Media and held a journalist's visa, was arrested in Tehran on December 19. He was held in solitary confinement in the notorious Evin prison in the Iranian capital.

Salah was arrested three days after Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini was arrested at Milan airport. A US arrest warrant had been issued against him for supplying drone parts that Washington said were used in an attack launched in 2024 that killed three US soldiers serving in Jordan.

Today's announcement by the Italian government clarified that Sala was freed thanks to intensive efforts made through diplomacy and intelligence services, without any reference to the Abedini case.
