A photo of the perpetrator of the assassination attempt on US President Donald Trump has been discovered, just 30 minutes before the event, in a hotel room.

31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen from California is accused of attempting to assassinate United States President Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents' Dinner, as federal prosecutors have revealed new details from the investigation.

According to court documents, the suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, had taken a selfie in his room at the Washington Hilton Hotel about 30 minutes before trying to force his way into the Saturday night event.

The photo, included in the arrest documents, shows Allen dressed in black clothes and a red tie, while carrying a bag that matched the one where ammunition was later found.

According to prosecutors, he also had with him a gun holster, a knife and tools such as pliers and wire cutters.

Authorities also released images of weapons and equipment he was allegedly carrying, demanding that he be held in custody without the right to bail.

According to the investigation, Allen is suspected of purchasing weapons in 2023 and 2025. Officials who analyzed his electronic devices and communications believe that his target was not only the president, but also members of the administration attending the event.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanch told NBC News that "he appears to have targeted people who work in the government, possibly even the president."

According to authorities, the suspect had traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington, planning the attack.

An FBI agent said in the affidavit that Allen had booked a three-night stay at the hotel where the event was taking place on April 6.

Investigators suspect he was aware of Trump's attendance, as the president had previously announced on Truth Social that he would attend the dinner.
