English football in mourning! West Ham legend passes away

West Ham United have sadly announced the death of club legend Billy Bonds MBE, who has passed away at the age of 79.

The news was announced on Sunday by his family through a touching statement, distributed by the club.

" We are devastated to announce that we lost our beloved father today, " the family wrote. " He was devoted to his family and a kind, loyal, dedicated and loving man. He loved West Ham and its fans with all his heart. His legacy will live on forever."

The family added that Bonds passed away "peacefully."

The London club described Bonds as a "legendary player, coach and manager", adding: " Rest in peace Billy, our brave, inspiring and lion-hearted leader."

Even Charlton Athletic, the only other club in his career, expressed their condolences, calling the loss "extremely painful."

Billy Bonds is widely regarded as the greatest player in West Ham's history. He joined the club in 1967 from Charlton and stayed for 21 years, making a total of 799 appearances - more than any other player in the club's history.

A versatile defender and midfielder, he guided the Hammers to two FA Cups and a Division Two title. After retiring from football at the age of 41, Bonds joined the staff and became the team's first manager in 1990, securing another Division Two title and promotion back to the top flight. He left the club in 1994, before continuing his coaching career at Millwall.
