A former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of attempted rape of an ex-partner.

The player, who wore the Three Lions jersey during the 2010s, was stopped by border authorities at the passport control point after the system signaled that he was wanted by police in connection with an allegation reported a few weeks ago.

According to sources, Border Force agents discreetly pulled the footballer over before he boarded a low-cost flight on Sunday evening. Shortly afterwards, officers from Essex Police arrived at the airport and arrested him.

The charges stem from a claim by his ex-partner that the player attempted to rape her during their relationship. She has been questioned by sex crimes specialists and offered psychological support.

The suspect, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was escorted to a local police station where his fingerprints, a DNA sample and official photo were taken. He was held for several hours and then released on bail while investigations continue.

The arrest has sparked surprise, as the player had recently participated in several public events, despite being wanted by police.

Essex Police confirmed: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been released on bail until the end of February 2026 while investigations continue."
