Carlos Alcaraz wins challenge with Sinner at Laureus Sports Awards; Spaniard is Sportsman of the Year

Carlos Alcaraz wins the challenge with Jannik Sinner at the Laureus Sports Awards 2026 or as they are otherwise defined 'Oscars' of Sport. For the third year in a row, the ceremony of these awards is held in Madrid, with Alcaraz being declared Sportsman of the Year.
Alcaraz won the award after an extraordinary 2025 that saw him win two Grand Slam titles (Roland Garros and US Open) and reach the Wimbledon final. At 22, the tennis player becomes the youngest athlete to win the award, following in the footsteps of other legends of the sport Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Carlos Alcaraz also won a Laureus award in 2023 as 'Discovery of the Year'
" It is an incredible honor for me to win the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award," said Alcaraz. " As a tennis player, I compete for titles on the court, but this Laureus statue means something more, because it means that I am recognized as one of the best athletes in the world in all disciplines. Three years ago, I won the Laureus Discovery of the Year award in Paris and met one of my idols, Lionel Messi, who won the Sportsman of the Year award. That day I dreamed of writing my name on the list of winners and today I did it. I am following in the footsteps of giants like Messi, Federer, Djokovic, Usain Bolt and of course the great Rafael Nadal. Now I understand why these awards mean so much to the best athletes in the world."
Alcaraz then also thanked his rival Jannik Sinner.
"If we hadn't faced each other so often on the field, motivating each other to improve our performances, I believe that none of us would have reached such levels," added Alcaraz. " I have always felt a strong connection to Laureus and the inspiring words of Nelson Mandela. I too believe that sport can change the world. Even after the awards night, Laureus shows how powerful sport can be in empowering young people around the world. Knowing that my story can inspire the next generation makes me feel proud, as does holding this Laureus statue."
