Briken Calja has returned to shine in major competitions. The weightlifter has set 3 records and won 3 gold medals in the Balkan Weightlifting Championship, which is being held in Durrës for the first time after a 25-year absence. Calja shone in the first attempt in the snatch, lifting 150 kilograms and setting a Balkan record. Calja did not succeed in the other two attempts, although the first attempt was sufficient.
During the performance of the national anthem, Calja was seen in tears, as the achieved result was a reward for a 3-year period filled with injuries but also difficult in a personal aspect for the athlete.
"This has been one of the most difficult experiences of my career. Considering the injuries and obstacles of this 3-year-old," said Briken Calja, weightlifter. Calja's success brought enthusiasm to the gym. "Only through sport have we reached Europe, where we want to go. For this reason, I thank the athletes, the coaches, Briken for this work and you even saw his tears today," said Fidel Ylli, president of KOKSH.
"The Albanian Weightlifting Federation will produce other medals very soon. We will raise the Albanian flag again, as we are on the right track with an extraordinary generation," said Elez Gjoza, president of the FSHP. Erkand Qerimaj also competed in the 79 kilogram category, but the weightlifter from Shkodran failed to complete the tests in both the snatch and the clean and jerk.
