Doctor who supplied actor Matthew Perry with ketamine sentenced to 30 months in

A California doctor who provided ketamine to “Friends” actor Matthew Perry was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Wednesday. Dr. Salvador Plasencia was one of five people investigated in a federal investigation into how Perry obtained the anesthetic through an illegal drug distribution network in Hollywood.

He is the first to be sentenced to prison in connection with the actor's death from an overdose, on October 28, 2023, according to the BBC.

Four other defendants, another doctor, his assistant and two suppliers of the fatal dose, have also pleaded guilty and are expected to be sentenced in the coming months.

Plasencia pleaded guilty last summer to four counts of distributing ketamine, which could have brought him up to 40 years in prison, although the prosecution had asked for three years.

In a letter to the court in November, he apologized and said he took full responsibility for his role in Perry's death.

The actor's family gave strong testimony before the sentencing, accusing the doctor of betraying the mission of his profession. "Matthew's recovery depended on you saying YES," the actor's father and stepmother wrote. "Your motives? We cannot understand them. How could a doctor who took an oath to help people act like this?"
