The reason why Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't want to be a director

Leonardo DiCaprio has no plans to stay behind the camera as a director, at least not in the near future.

The famous actor participated in a conversation with renowned director Martin Scorsese as part of TIME magazine's "A Year in TIME" event, which took place in New York on December 10. During their conversation, the actor admitted that he has no desire to direct, explaining that he thinks he will never be able to reach Scorsese's level.

“Some people have asked me if I would like to direct. And I say, ‘I would never want to direct. I could never do something like what Martin Scorsese does. Why would I try?’”

The star of the film "The One Battle After Another" added, however, that in some of his previous works he wished he had taken a step back and "observed" the process of creating a film as a whole.

"You emulate these characters, you try to get as deep into their souls as possible. And I would have liked to have been more of a spectator... to see what you (Scorsese) do behind the camera," he said.

"Looking back, I wish I had observed this process behind the camera much more closely ," he added.

The Oscar-winning actor, who has collaborated on six films with Scorsese to date, also spoke about their unique creative relationship, revealing that they spend "months" of preparation and discussions before filming begins.

“That’s pretty much our process when we work together… the ability to talk for almost months, ask countless questions, and play devil’s advocate on how to approach something, even if it’s not the most obvious direction.”

In closing, he added: “This is exactly what we are doing in the new film we are currently preparing, and I can say that it has been one of the most profound and meaningful learning experiences of my life.”
