He was suspended from duty for tenders worth hundreds of millions of euros,

Socialist MPs voted on Thursday against an opposition request for an urgent interpellation with Prime Minister Edi Rama to answer questions regarding the impeachment of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, who is accused by the Special Prosecution Office of violating equality in tenders worth 210 million euros.

Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi justified that the interpellation could not be made because the matter was being reviewed by the Constitutional Court.

"It is this body that will provide a final interpretation on the competencies and division of powers between institutions. Any attempt to issue a political decision before the constitutional review is completed could violate the principles of the independence of institutions," he said.

Balluku was suspended from executive functions by decision of the Special Court, GJKKO, while Rama opposed it as an infringement of his prime ministerial powers and sent the case for interpretation to the Constitutional Court, where it has not yet been given a preliminary review.

But the opposition did not accept the argument and accused the majority of defending a corruption defendant and of hiding from accountability in parliament.

"Rama must come to account for why he feels it is necessary to hold a deputy prime minister as a defendant, why he is lying when he says that the government's work has been blocked," said, among other things, the head of the DP parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi.

Since the communication of the accusation by SPAK, neither Balluku nor Rama I have avoided accountability in Parliament despite the demands of opposition MPs.

Rama has asked the Constitutional Court to reinstate Balluk until the merits of the case are reviewed, but his request has not yet passed the preliminary review after the Constitutional Court announced that the judges' meeting will be held on December 12.

In addition to 'reinstating' Balluk, Rama has asked the Constitutional Court to resolve the dispute over competence created between the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers and the Special Court regarding the suspension of a minister's duties.

Since submitting the request, he has increased public pressure on the court to make a decision in favor of his request, considering the suspension of his close associate "as a unique and dangerous precedent."

The Special Court decided to suspend the Deputy Prime Minister from her post and ban her from leaving the country, blocking her passport, after she was indicted on charges of violating equality in tenders after she is accused of manipulating two tenders worth 210 million euros, together with her closest subordinates, Evis Berberi, Gentian Gjyli and Erald Elezi, favoring the winning companies./ BIRN
