SPAK opened "Pandora's Box"

By Rigels Seliman
Albania in recent years has become a great economic and social paradox. On the one hand, official figures speak of economic growth and a tourist "boom"; on the other hand, the ordinary citizen faces a reality where survival becomes more difficult every day. In this extorted, stolen and robbed Albania, where corruption has flourished in every cell of the system, the recent operations of the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) against some of the most powerful businessmen and builders in the country - suspected of laundering drug money - constitute a historic turning point that should be strongly welcomed by the entire public opinion.
These actions are not just a routine judicial process; they represent the long-awaited opening of the "Pandora's Box" for what is otherwise called the financial oligarchy linked to crime. For more than a decade, a dangerous and almost indestructible trinity has operated in Albania: organized crime, the construction business and corrupt politicians. This trinity has become a single body. The money generated by international drug trafficking allegedly found its safe haven in the towers and residential complexes that sprouted above our cities, mainly in Tirana and on the coast. Politics, on the other hand, provided building permits, legal changes and immunity protection, benefiting in exchange for electoral campaign financing and guaranteed power.
With this blow, the myth of untouchability in Albania came to an end once and for all. For years, oligarchs and construction bosses lived in a parallel reality, where the law did not exist for them. No one dared to approach them, nor investigate them, nor mention their names, since their economic power and close ties to the political dome made them seem all-powerful. It was only SPAK that dared to break this dangerous taboo. Only this institution managed to approach these untouchable structures, shaking to the core the oligarchs who thought they had bought their peace forever. This shaking of the status quo is the clearest proof that empires built on illegality are no longer immune.
The consequences of this criminal symbiosis fell directly on the backs of ordinary Albanians. The most visible and devastating effect was felt in the real estate market. Apartment and rental prices in Albania soared into the stratosphere, reaching levels comparable to the most expensive European metropolises, while citizens' salaries remained among the lowest in the region. This artificial increase in prices did not come from real market demand or from increased well-being, but from the urgent need of criminal groups to "launder" their bags of dirty money. As a result, buying a house became an impossible dream for young families and young professionals, further fueling the mass exodus of youth.
But SPAK's crackdown strikes at the very heart of this mechanism. By seizing assets and holding builders and businessmen who until yesterday dared not touch them accountable, justice is proving that no one can be above the law. These operations have dismantled the illusion that dirty money can buy endless peace and legitimacy.
However, this should only be the beginning. For this crackdown to have a long-term effect and heal the country’s deformed economy, the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) must follow the money trail to the officials and politicians who signed off on and allowed this socio-economic massacre in Albania. The salute to this operation should not be just passive applause from afar, but a strong civic support to encourage prosecutors not to stop at any name or position. Only by cleaning the construction of drug money, shaking the oligarchy and destroying their immunity, Albania can hope for the return of a normal market, affordable prices and, above all, the restoration of the trampled dignity of its citizens.
