Faced with pressure from protests, Rama tells Western media when he will resign

Edi Rama has revealed for the first time in an interview with the prestigious magazine Vanity Fair when he thinks his political career at the head of the government will end.
Asked about the demands of protesters who have been demanding his resignation for weeks, Rama said he has no intention of stepping down as long as he still feels passionate about politics. However, he also revealed the moment he would consider most appropriate to resign.
"As long as I feel the fire of passion, I will stay. If Albania were truly accepted into the EU, the first meeting as a member state would be the most beautiful occasion to resign," Rama said.
In the same interview, the head of government also expressed a strong stance on how the European Union should function, stating that he remains willing to give up the right of veto for member states.
"Absolutely. Europe should be like a family table where there is hierarchy. I'm not talking about different categories of citizenship, but the EU cannot function with the full consensus of everyone," he said.
Rama also argued that the integration of the Western Balkans is in the European Union's own interest.
"A recent study by the European Parliament says that, in financial terms, leaving the Western Balkans out is more costly than bringing them in," the Albanian prime minister declared.
The statements come at a time when his government faces daily protests in Tirana.
