Malaj: If Rama does not resign, there could be a bitter end

Former Socialist Finance Minister Arben Malaj has commented on the recent political developments in the country at a time when SPAK has requested the arrest of Belinda Balluku and Rama has become the latter's 'lawyer'.

Invited to News24, Malaj stated that any decision must respect the principle of equality before the law, warning that it would be problematic if politics tried to stop the arrest of officials accused of corruption.

He also criticized Edi Rama, saying that the country is facing a political crisis and that resignation, according to him, would be an act of responsibility.

"The fundamental principle of a legal state is that everyone is equal before the law and this principle should apply to every Albanian. The crisis has taken root. The first signs of a failed leader's illness are seeing enemies everywhere. He sees international enemies, inside and outside the party. This psychosis will cost him dearly if he does not resign. Resignation is a sign of patriotism. If he stays longer, it will be worse," Malaj said.

However, he stressed that he does not believe the country will head towards destabilization, adding that citizens are disappointed and often choose to emigrate due to a lack of trust in politics.

According to Malaj, efforts to weaken the new justice system will not succeed.

"It is impossible for Rama to succeed in dissolving SPAK, as was once attempted in Romania. There is no turning back. Either he will cooperate sincerely with justice, or there will be a bitter political end," he said.

Finally, Malaj added that one of the main reasons for citizens' disappointment is the perception that criminal money is intertwined with political power in the country.
