DASH adds 12 more countries to the list, $15,000 guarantee to obtain a US visa

The US Department of State, the administration of US President Donald Trump, has imposed a new measure that forces citizens of some countries to deposit up to $15,000 in guarantees to obtain a visa to the US.

According to a State Department official, the existing program has been expanded to include 12 more countries, bringing the total number of countries involved to 50. The program primarily affects developing countries, many of them in Africa.

The department itself  published this decision  on its website today (March 18).

The $15,000 bond will be returned to applicants if they respect the visa conditions and return to their country, or if they do not travel at all,  the media reports .

The measure will take effect on April 2 and applies to B1 and B2 visas, which are used for business and tourism travel. It is intended to prevent visitors from overstaying their visas.

The 12 new countries included in this program are: Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Grenada, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles and Tunisia.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations have criticized these measures, describing them as restrictive of individual freedoms, while American authorities defend them as necessary to strengthen national security.

According to the State Department, the guarantees program has yielded results by reducing the number of people overstaying their visas in the US.
