Former Democratic Party MP Ervin Salianji held a meeting with intellectuals in Tirana today, where he focused on the political situation and the functioning of democracy in the country.
During his speech, Salianji stressed the importance of respecting the rules by political parties, warning that their absence undermines democracy itself.
“Without parties that obey the rules, we no longer have democracy. Today, resignation is not even considered a sublime act. Politics seems to aim not at the participation of intellectuals and citizens, but at discouraging them from participating in processes. It seems as if real debate on the economy or public administration does not exist. It seems as if the voices that react are strange, when it should be the opposite,” he said. Salianji raised concerns about the lack of real choices both within political parties and for citizens in selecting their representatives.
"Lack of real elections, both in the SP and the DP, lack of real elections by citizens of their representatives, as we have a system where party leaders are elected more," he said.
