Was Sali Berisha and his family really removed from the US as non grata?

A piece of news that circulated rapidly this Thursday in the Albanian media has raised a number of questions regarding the "non grata" status of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha in the United States of America.

According to initial reports published by journalist Çim Peka, it has been announced that Sali Berisha is no longer under "persona non grata" status by the United States of America. This news was immediately accompanied by reactions in the Parliament hall, where opposition MPs were present and welcomed their leader with applause.

Sali Berisha himself, in a statement to the media, said: "Sali Berisha has never been non grata", adding that this was a previous visa ban, which according to him has now been lifted. He also emphasized his gratitude, underlining that he can travel to the United States of America again.

However, when asked about his family members, whether they have also been removed from the Americans' "blacklist", Berisha did not give any comment.

It is worth noting that so far there has been no official information from the US Department of State or the US Embassy in Tirana regarding any change in his "non grata" status.

In another line of reporting, sources claim that in this case it is not a question of a complete removal of the "non grata" status, but of a temporary travel permit to the US, granted for health reasons.

According to these rumors, what is certain at this moment is only the fact that Berisha can travel to the US, while the issue of his status still remains unclear.

Meanwhile, indirect reactions from figures close to the DP have also been interpreted on social networks as confirmation of recent developments, although without direct statements on the removal of the status.

We recall that Sali Berisha was declared "persona non grata" by the US State Department in May 2021, on the grounds that he had been involved in high-level corruption and had undermined democratic processes. The decision also included his family members, who were banned from entering US territory.
