Prime Minister Albin Kurti, through a Facebook status, has brought attention to the Battle of Koshara.
Like today, 27 years ago, the fighting of the Battle of Koshara began, with the aim of destroying the border between Kosovo and Albania, which for decades had violently divided Albanians among themselves.
In his reaction, Kurti states that 114 KLA fighters fell martyrs fighting for the liberation of Kosovo, while over 400 others were injured.
Like today, 27 years ago, the fighting of the Battle of Koshara began, with the aim of destroying the border between Kosovo and Albania, which for decades had violently divided Albanians among themselves.
On April 9, 1999, in the early morning, soldiers of the Kosovo Liberation Army overran Serbian military positions in the border zone between the Republic of Albania and Yugoslavia, attacking the “July 7” base, the Koshara ridge and the Gllava peak. From that day until June 10, for two full months, thousands of KLA members would be involved in the fighting of the Battle of Koshara, in a territory stretching several kilometers and in a rugged mountainous and hilly terrain.
The Battle of Koshara began two weeks after the start of NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and continued until the last day of this campaign. During those days, a national liberation army of volunteers such as the KLA became an ally of the world's largest military alliance, NATO, which together stopped the campaigns of ethnic cleansing and genocide that Milosevic's Serbia and Yugoslavia were carrying out against the Albanians of Kosovo.
Amid fierce fighting during the Battle of Koshara, 114 KLA fighters were martyred fighting for the liberation of Kosovo, while over 400 others were injured.
On the opposing side, the Serbian side would never publish the full details of the shameful losses from this battle, but over 100 members of the Yugoslav army were killed and many more were wounded.
Every spring, we remember with gratitude and honor all the KLA fighters who bravely participated in the Battle of Koshare, giving sweat, toil, and blood for our homeland and the freedom of the people.
Glory to the martyrs who fell in the Battle of Koshare, today and tomorrow!
