From April 10, the European Entry-Exit System comes into force in the 29 Schengen countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs citizens about the details
The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs informs Albanian citizens that, starting from April 10, 2026, the European Entry/Exit System (EES) will enter into full operation in the 29 countries of the Schengen area, replacing the manual stamping of passports with the electronic registration of the entries and exits of citizens from non-member countries of the European Union.
This system, which has been partially implemented since October 2025, will apply to all citizens traveling for short-term stays, up to 90 days within a 180-day period, in the Schengen area.
Citizens should note the following:
Upon first entry after April 10, 2026, the following will be registered at the border crossing point:
passport details;
facial photograph;
fingerprints.
Refusal to provide biometric data will result in refusal of entry into the Schengen area.
In the initial phase of implementation, there may be delays at airports, ports and land border crossings; therefore, citizens are advised to report early for travel.
The passport must be valid and in good physical condition.
No prior application for the EES is required; registration is carried out at the moment of border crossing.
The system does not change the existing rule of stay: maximum 90 days in any 180-day period.
The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs recommends that citizens be informed in advance about the new procedures and plan their travels taking into account the additional time needed for border controls.
For further information, citizens can consult the official European Union website for the EES:
