Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned today that any additional restrictions by Iran on the Strait of Hormuz would have "unforeseeable economic consequences" and stressed the need for the full restoration of freedom of movement in the area.
Meloni, addressing Parliament, assessed that the Strait of Hormuz is the "most critical point" within the agreement between the US and Iran.
"It is necessary to fully restore freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz and this should not be subject to any restrictions, as has been the case in recent hours," Meloni said.
She added that, if the crisis in Iran worsens, the European Union should consider the possibility of temporarily suspending the Stability and Growth Pact, a set of rules governing public finances in the EU.
