Study: Drinking beetroot juice leads to healthy aging

Findings from a recent study show that drinking beetroot juice promotes a healthy mix of oral bacteria that are associated with healthy brain and blood vessel function.

Beets, and other foods like lettuce, spinach, and celery, are rich in inorganic nitrate, and many oral bacteria play a role in converting nitrate into nitric oxide, which helps regulate blood vessels and transport neurotransmitters (chemical messages to the brain).

Older people tend to have lower nitric oxide production, and this is associated with poor blood vessel health and poor cognition.

In the study, 26 elderly people participated in two complementary 10-day periods; one period of nitrate-rich beetroot juice and another of nitrate-free placebo juice, which they drank twice a day.

The results showed higher levels of bacteria associated with good vascular and cognitive health, and lower levels of bacteria associated with disease and inflammation.

Systolic blood pressure dropped by an average of five points (mmHg) after they drank the beetroot juice.
