A strong testimony to a magical and historic moment

It took me a relatively long time and deep reflection to distinguish between the personal emotional weight and the historical one that the Student Movement, the overthrow of the communist dictatorship, the creation of the Democratic Party and the start of the democratic era, or as it is called differently and more simply in public, the December '90s Movement, brought to the history of Albania and to the lives of Albanians.
In the days that followed, in the years that followed, consumed by the magic of a long-dreamed-of but unknown world, I believed that this was neither less nor more than our great destiny. It was a turning point that had changed our lives, of the generation that was living it, and would undoubtedly influence the subsequent life of my country. It took some time to get to know the history and the phases through which it had passed in Albania, to reach a conclusion that I now have not only conviction, but also a consolidated conclusion. December 1990 was not only an important political turning point, nor a student protest that changed a form of regime; nor the transition from a centralized and bankrupt communist economy to a market economy, nor the liberation of a people isolated for four and a half decades; nor its religious revival.
December 1990 was the beginning of a new political class, which continues to lead Albania today. But the principles that gave birth to this political class that has been leading the country for 35 years and will likely continue to lead it for a long time, were born in December 1990. The historical time of a political class does not coincide with and is not necessarily equal to its physical age. It is calculated on the principles that gave birth to it and can continue for decades and beyond.
The history of modern Albania or the history of the Albanian state, if we can call it that, records at least 3 such cases in 113 years.
The first political class, which led a certain era of the Albanian state, is the one that declared independence. The class of 1912, which with many sacrifices and deprivations, but also with great faith, built an Albania that finally managed to have a territorial unity and a kind of social development. This political class, most notably represented by Ahmet Zogu, a 17-year-old participant in the independence rally, later Prime Minister, President, and King of Albania, dominated the country from its founding until the fall of 1944.
Në Nëntorin e 1944, një klasë e re politike filloi të ravijëzohej në vend. Ndryshe nga klasa e mëparshme që kishte në bazë të saj nacionalizmin dhe etninë, kjo klasë e re mbështetej mbi ideologjinë. Ithtare e një ideologjie të re, dominuese në shumë vende të Europës, komunizmit, ajo erdhi në krye të vendit duke larguar përdhunshëm e madje duke ekzekutuar një pjesë të mirë të klasës së mëparshme politike. E përfaqësuar më së shumi nga Enver Hoxha, lideri dhe diktatori komunist, ajo e dominoi vendin nga vjeshta e vitit 1944 deri në dhjetor 1990, duke ngjallur në fillim një lloj entuziazmi dhe në fund, një dështim dhe mjerim masiv, që e bëri atë klasën më të anatemuar në historinë e Shqipërisë.
Klasa e re dhe e tretë politike e Shqipërisë, lindi pikërisht nga ajo Lëvizje që unë e konsideroja emocionin më të madh të jetës sime dhe të gjithë pjesëmarrësve që u ndodhën aty: Lëvizja e Dhjetorit. Ajo erdhi si një lëvizje që kishte në bazat e saj parimet e demokracisë dhe lirisë, të brishta ose të mohuara nga gjithë klasat e tjera politike. E dominuar nga disa personazhe si Sali Berisha apo Fatos Nano e së fundmi Edi Rama, ajo vijon të drejtojë Shqipërinë me gjithë problemet e saj.
Dhe pikërisht atë ditë, madje atë orë të lindjes së saj, Preç Zogaj ishte atje. Herë protagonist e herë dëshmitar, herë motorr lëvizës e herë zë kritik i saj, Preç Zogaj është padyshim ndër burimet më të besuara dhe autoritare të këtij momenti të rëndësishëm historik. Ai ju bashkua Lëvizjes studentore në mëngjesin e të hënës 10 Dhjetor. U bë dëshmitar i protestës dhe një shtytës publik i saj. Së bashku me shumë pak intelektualë të kohës ai përcolli përfaqësinë e studentëve në takimin me Presidentin e kohës, Ramiz Alinë dhe po atë mbrëmje mori pjesë në themelimin e Partisë Demokratike të Shqipërisë, partisë së parë opozitare pas më thuajse 66 vitesh në Shqipëri. Po ato ditë ai u bë inisiator, bashkëthemelues dhe drejtues Këshillit Botues të gazetës së parë opozitare dhe të lirë në Shqipëri, Rilindjes Demokratike. Që shënjoi edhe fillimin e lirisë së shtypit në Shqipëri. Zhvillimet e më pasme kanë pastaj një ritëm thjeshtë të pobesueshëm, por edhe të paharrueshëm.
The book "Beginnings" was published a decade ago, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the December 1990 Movement. It has occurred to me to refer to it often in publications, "Beginnings" is not simply a book of memories, although it essentially began as such. It is a strong historical testimony, a genuine historical documentary book. The memories of the protagonists are confronted there with the documents of the time in most of them. There are original testimonies of speeches, attitudes, but also declarations of a movement that at its core never had a signed document, but the power of the word. In this respect, this book is a document in itself, to shed light on this magical and mysterious moment for others, which whether we like it or not marked and continues to mark the lives of all Albanians through the political principles that it instilled.
Like similar publications, this book will remain there even when its protagonists are no longer in the active field of politics or perhaps have even left this world. It will be a testament to a time of thrills, heroism, fear, success and failure, but undoubtedly the incomparable passion that conceived it. And Preç Zogaj has been there not only to push it further, but also to document with “Beginnings” this beginning, now 35 years ago, of the new history of Albania.
