The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, participated in the international conference on economy, business, innovation and technology (ICEBIT 2025), held in Tirana.

In his speech, Sejko emphasized the crucial role of digital transformation for modern economies, describing it as the foundation on which the societies of the future will be built.

"It is a special pleasure to be among you today, at this important international conference, which unites academic research with economic practice and brings to the center of attention one of the greatest challenges of our time: how to build an intelligent, resilient and smart specialization-oriented economy."

He underlined that technological transformation is taking place at an extraordinary pace and that countries need new development strategies, where knowledge, innovation and technology must be combined with public policies and human capital development.

“Digital transformation is no longer an option, but the foundation on which the economies of the future will be built. Artificial intelligence and automation are creating new opportunities for growth, efficiency and competitiveness. For emerging economies like Albania, technology offers the potential to overcome structural constraints, reduce transaction costs, increase transparency and enter new markets faster than ever before.”

Sejko noted the achievement of Albania's integration into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), as of October 7, 2025, describing this as a historic step for the country's financial system.

“SEPA integration translates into faster payments to Europe, lower costs, higher security standards, and more opportunities for trade, investment, and digital services. In parallel, we are working to modernize domestic payment systems, to enable instant and secure payments 24/7, to promote the use of electronic payments, and to reduce the use of physical cash.”

The Governor emphasized that innovation is also influencing the design of monetary policy and the monitoring of financial stability.

"At the Bank of Albania, we are applying advanced models for inflation forecasting, using data analysis to assess risks in the financial system, digitizing the way we obtain statistics and collect data, and strengthening transparency through new means of public communication."

Next, Sejko praised the role of the University of Tirana and academia in building human capital, describing it as an irreplaceable partner in the development process.

“The University of Tirana, and especially the Faculty of Economics, represents one of the most important centers of economic knowledge in the country. Scientific research, international partnerships, the promotion of start-ups and innovation laboratories are bridges that connect theory with practice and academia with the market. Preparing new generations who understand the digital economy, modern finance, the role of data and the challenges of the green transition is an investment with a multifaceted effect for society.”

At the end of his speech, the Governor of the Bank of Albania emphasized the importance of cooperation between public institutions and universities, as well as the role of international conferences in creating new ideas.

“Public institutions and universities have a great deal of room for collaboration: from data exchange and student involvement in real research projects, to developing new analytical models and building capacities in areas such as financial stability, monetary policy, payment systems and financial education. Conferences like this are the ideal place where new ideas are born, where challenges are openly discussed and where partnerships are built. I am convinced that your discussions will contribute not only to the academic literature, but also to the design of policies and best practices for our economies.”
