Iran causes FIFA confusion/ Participation in the 2026 World Cup remains

Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup is not guaranteed due to political tensions and security concerns, but so far the Iranian federation has not made any official announcement of withdrawal from the tournament.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed that it had not received any such requests and that the final decision rests with the Iranian federation. AFC Secretary General Windsor John said:

"It's a very delicate moment. The final decision lies with their federation, but they have so far confirmed their presence at the World Cup. We hope that the issues will be resolved and the team will participate."

If Iran participates, the national team will play Group G matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, facing Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

The situation is more complicated for the Iranian women's team, several of whose players sought political asylum in Australia following anti-regime protests. Only two of them remain in Australia and train with the Brisbane Roar women's team.

The conflicts in the Middle East have also affected other international sporting events. For example, the 'Finalissima' match between Spain and Argentina, scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, has been canceled due to security concerns, while several motorsport events in the same country have been postponed until November.
