Foreign investments in the US filter/ US Embassy: New mechanism to guarantee national security and avoid malicious factors

Foreign investments in Albania are expected to be reviewed through a new mechanism with the aim of guaranteeing fair economic deals to protect against bad actors, which will help the government increase accountability. This mechanism aims to provide a more open and transparent climate for foreign investors in Albanian territory, especially for American companies. In response to Top Channel journalist Kristi Gongo, the US Embassy explains that the investment review mechanism is a legal practice that appears to purge harmful investment requests, seeking to protect Albania's national security.

“An investment screening mechanism is a legal tool that allows governments to review foreign investments to ensure that they do not pose risks to national security. Such a mechanism would protect Albania’s critical sectors from malicious actors and support an open and transparent investment environment that is fair and predictable for U.S. and other companies, strengthening Albania’s role as a trusted partner in the global economy.”

Following the meeting of Chargé d’Affaires Nancy Vanhorn with the Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj, where the United States Embassy’s plan to provide American expertise on concessions and the need for the adoption of an investment screening mechanism was revealed, Top Channel approached them with the question of how this instrument will function and who it targets. An Embassy official responded to the media interest by explaining that the United States seeks to strengthen international cooperation in Albania by supporting fair partnerships for American businesses, and not only.

"The United States is committed to supporting economic prosperity and fair partnerships for Americans, including American businesses in Albania, as well as strengthening the security of critical technologies."

The American official highlights that the United States regularly shares American expertise with Albania through programs and exchanges in joint relations on issues of mutual interest. /TCH/
