Arrested for tender abuses/ After release, Mogherini resigns as Rector of the College of Europe

Federica Mogherini, the EU's former top diplomat, has resigned from her role as rector of the College of Europe after being named a suspect in a fraud investigation over alleged favoritism in EU-funded diplomatic training.

In a statement after a meeting of the College's Executive Committee on Thursday, she said: "In accordance with the utmost rigor and fairness with which I have always carried out my duties, I have today decided to resign as rector."

Mogherini has served as rector of the College of Europe since 2020, overseeing its campuses in Bruges, Warsaw and Tirana. She also took on the role of director of the diplomatic academy in 2022, a position that EU governments made permanent in 2024, funding her with €1.7 million a year.
