Turkey is considering opening its borders with Armenia, closed since the 1990s

Turkey is considering opening its land borders with Armenia within the next six months, thus removing the last closed border in Europe since the Cold War and paving the way for the revival of trade in the Caucasus.

Turkey closed its borders in 1993 as a sign of solidarity with its ally, Azerbaijan, during the war with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The landlocked mountainous region in the South Caucasus broke away from Azerbaijan shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, sparking decades of conflict. Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump signed a joint peace declaration with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, aiming to end the conflict.

Diplomatic progress with Azerbaijan and the reopening of borders with Turkey will provide a significant boost to Armenia's Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, who will run in the June elections.

If re-elected, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev could work with Pashinyan and formalize a peace deal, according to sources familiar with the rapprochement between the two countries. Only then could Turkey appoint an ambassador to Armenia to restore diplomatic relations, the sources reported.
