The Express/ World War III on the horizon, Trump orders Australia and Japan to prepare for war with China
The US has reportedly asked its Pacific allies to prepare for a possible conflict with China over Taiwan, while Japan warns of a 'new era of crisis' and Beijing appears to be significantly increasing investment in military technologies.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and claims sovereignty over it, despite the island having an independent democratic government widely recognized around the world.
Tensions have been rising since late 2020 over what China calls "gray tactics," including intensified military exercises near Taiwan and an increased presence of Chinese aircraft and warships in the area. Meanwhile, a shocking map has revealed the 10 safest places to flee in the event of a nuclear World War III.
While the US has traditionally supported Taiwan militarily, economically and diplomatically, this stance has wavered during Donald Trump's presidency.
A recent report from the Financial Times suggests that the US remains committed to defending Taiwan, but now expects regional allies such as Japan and Australia to be willing to share the burden in the event of conflict, writes Mirror US.
The US is urging these countries to increase military spending as a counterweight to any potential aggressive actions by China.
An unidentified US official stressed: "We are not seeking war. Nor do we seek to dominate China itself. What we are doing is ensuring that the US and its allies have the appropriate military strength to support diplomacy and guarantee peace."
"We are addressing our allies in the Indo-Pacific, similarly to what the president did in Europe, and we are saying: this is the threat situation.
"Of course, some of these conversations are difficult, including those on defense spending. But we believe it will lead us all to a better position."
This week, Japan issued stern warnings over the rapid escalation of Chinese military actions in vast territories stretching from its southwestern coast to the Pacific, describing these actions as the greatest strategic challenge.
Growing cooperation between Beijing and Russia also poses a serious security risk to Japan, in addition to rising tensions over Taiwan and threats from North Korea, according to the Defense Ministry's annual report presented to the Cabinet on Tuesday.
"International society is in a new era of crisis, facing the greatest challenges since the end of World War II," the document says, highlighting major shifts in the global power structure and expressing concern about growing competition between the US and China. / The Express -
