India tightens pollution restrictions as Delhi's air quality worsens

India tightened anti-pollution measures in Delhi and surrounding areas after air quality in the capital deteriorated to its worst level of the season.
The Air Quality Management Commission activated the fourth stage, the highest level, of the Graded Response Action Plan for Delhi and surrounding areas on Saturday evening, following an advisory from India's environment ministry.
On Sunday, Delhi's air quality was "severe" with official index readings above 450 at several monitoring stations, up from 430 on Saturday and the highest so far this winter season, Central Pollution Control Board data showed.
Readings below 50 are "good."
The borders ban the entry of old diesel trucks, suspend construction, including public projects, and impose hybrid schooling.
The area, home to 30 million people, is often blanketed in smog during the winter as cold, dense air traps emissions from vehicles, construction sites and crop burning in neighboring countries, pushing pollution levels among the highest in the world and exposing residents to severe respiratory risks.
Authorities urged residents to stay indoors, especially children and those with respiratory or heart problems, and to consider using masks when going outside.
The deterioration in air quality was caused by high humidity and a change in wind direction, conditions that hinder the dispersion of pollutants and promote the formation of smog, according to the Air Quality Management Commission.
