High-rise building collapses in London, residents are urgently evacuated

More than 100 people were evacuated and two were taken to hospital after a fire broke out in a building in Dagenham, east London.

The British capital's fire brigade announced it was carrying out a major search and rescue operation after it was called by the public to put out the fire which engulfed the building on Freshwater Road at around 7.30am.

About 225 firefighters and 45 vehicles arrived at the scene and were engaged in extinguishing the flames in the building that serves as a commercial unit and apartment block. The fire service advised residents in the area to keep their windows closed due to the black cloud of smoke.

" The building has a number of fire safety issues which are known to the London Fire Brigade. A full simultaneous evacuation of the building was immediately carried out and a major search and rescue operation is underway. Drones have been deployed to tackle the fire, as well as 64m and 32m ladders used as lookout points to assess the fire and douse it with water from above ," London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe said.
