US suspends immigration from 19 countries, Trump: We will extend the list to 30

Despite criticism that such a move would leave thousands of people stranded, the US government decided to block immigration applications from 19 countries, claiming it was strengthening national security controls.

And it seems that the Trump administration will not stop there. At least 30 countries will be targeted, and even more may be added in the future. "We will publish the full list very soon," said a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security.

Since Donald Trump took office as President of the United States, immigration detentions have increased across the country. But the latest move was prompted by security concerns following the attack on National Guard members in Washington last week.

An Afghan national was detained as a suspect. Under the new policy, all applicants from affected countries must undergo a careful vetting process.

The administration has not specified how long the suspension will last, or whether other countries might be added. Authorities say the change is intended to ensure the integrity of the immigration system and prevent what they call “security gaps.”

Some of the countries on the list were already subject to a partial travel ban. The countries facing the most severe restrictions are Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. These countries have seen complete suspensions of most entry, with limited exceptions.
