Iran has placed about 12 naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to two sources cited by the international agency Reuters.
One of the sources said the positions of most of the mines are known, but did not provide details on how the United States plans to deal with the situation.
According to the report, Tehran has repeatedly warned that in the event of a military attack on it, it could respond by placing mines in this strategic strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important shipping lanes for energy transport. About a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade passes through the area, giving Iran a significant leverage over the US and its allies if shipping through the area were to be disrupted.
