The Skagit and Snohomish rivers in Oregon and Washington are at critical levels, and authorities are warning of a situation that could escalate into a disaster.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Wednesday as incessant rain and snow in mountainous areas increased the risk of flash flooding. Authorities warned that supply chains and transportation networks could be severely affected.

An immediate evacuation order has been issued in Skagit County, a popular agricultural area. State Emergency Management Director Robert Ezelle said about 75,000 residents in the lower reaches of the Skagit River are expected to be evacuated.

Evacuations are also continuing in the city of Sultan, where heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise rapidly.

Evacuation orders have been issued for several communities in British Columbia, including Tulameen and Eastgate. The city of Abbotsford announced emergency evacuations for 371 properties Wednesday evening.

Roads leading to Vancouver have been closed due to flooding, landslides and the risk of avalanches.

Although the rains are expected to ease by Thursday afternoon, authorities warn that river levels will continue to rise. Meanwhile, another storm is expected to hit the region on Sunday, keeping the situation unstable.
