The people are SOVEREIGN!/ Bulgaria's government obeys citizens after mass

Following the protests that set Sofia on fire yesterday evening, the Bulgarian government has decided to withdraw the draft budget for 2026.

The protests were a follow-up to this draft budget, which envisaged higher taxes and social security contributions in the private sector and more funds to be directed towards the state sector.

Protesters also expressed strong dissatisfaction with corruption in the public sector, demanding the resignation of the minority government led by Rosen Zhelezkov.

Bulgaria, with a population of 6.4 million, consistently ranks among the most corrupt countries in the European Union, according to Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index.

We recall that yesterday evening in the center of Sofia, in the large square in front of the National Assembly building, about 50,000 people gathered, chanting: "Resignation!" "Resignation" and "Mafia" in government buildings. Two large banners read respectively "Generation Z is coming" and "New Bulgaria without the mafia."

Demonstrations were also held in larger cities such as Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Dobrich, Sliven, Veliko Tarnovo, Shumen, Ruse, Lovech, Blagoevgrad.
