Part of the agreement, Israel: We will open the Rafah crossing in the coming days

Israel announced a partial opening of the Rafah border crossing, which connects the Gaza Strip with Egypt, as part of a ceasefire agreement with Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
However, the crossing will only be opened for Palestinians who want to leave the territory.
"In accordance with the ceasefire agreement and under the guidance of the political spectrum, the Rafah crossing will be opened in the coming days exclusively for the exit of residents from the Gaza Strip to Egypt," said COGAT, which is the authority responsible for implementing Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories.
"The exit of residents through the Rafah crossing will be facilitated through coordination with Egypt, following security approvals made by Israel and under the supervision of the European Union mission," the statement said.
However, a statement from the Egyptian State Information Service denied coordination with Israel for the opening of the Rafah border in the coming days.
Citing an official Egyptian source, the agency stated that, in the event of an agreement to open the crossing, border traffic would take place in both directions – both for entry and exit from the Gaza Strip.
This would be consistent with the approach formulated in US President Donald Trump's proposal for a ceasefire, the statement said.
COGAT said the process after the border reopens would be similar to the mechanism that existed in January 2025, when the crossing was opened for a short period to allow the exit of wounded Gaza residents and then closed again.
The opening of the border with Egypt has been postponed several times since the ceasefire agreement was reached on October 10.
Since then, Palestinians have been able to leave the Gaza Strip only through the Kerem Shalom crossing, under strict restrictions.
Israel does not want Rafah to serve as a crossing point to allow humanitarian aid shipments, which mainly arrive in Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.
The EU plans to contribute to monitoring operations in Rafah through its civilian Border Assistance Mission, once the crossing is opened./ REL
