Thousands of Kurdish fighters based in Iraq have launched a ground offensive against Iranian regime forces, according to an official from the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan (CPFIK).

The official stated that fighters affiliated with the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) have begun taking up combat positions inside Iranian territory since midnight on March 2.

"Ground military movements by Kurdish forces against Iran have begun since midnight on March 2," he was quoted as saying.

According to the same source, Iranian forces evacuated the border town of Mariwan on March 3 and set up defensive positions in and around the area. He added that PJAK fighters have moved to the mountainous areas south of Mariwan, in western Iran, as well as deep into the Zagros mountain range.

According to CNN, the CIA is considering plans to arm Kurdish forces with the aim of fomenting an uprising within Iran. Meanwhile, Axios reported that US President Donald Trump has held talks with Kurdish leaders in Iraq regarding the conflict involving Israel and Iran.

The Wall Street Journal has also reported that the Trump administration is open to supporting armed groups within Iran that aim to challenge the government.
