Negotiations with Donald Trump: Maduro asked for $200 million, amnesty for 100 officials and safe exile

A rare diplomatic attempt to convince Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to resign has failed within just 15 minutes, after some of his demands were deemed "unacceptable" by the Donald Trump administration.
According to The Telegraph, during a short and tense phone call, Maduro had several demands, which were impossible for the US administration to fulfill. Among them:
-$200 million before leaving,
-guaranteed amnesty for up to 100 senior regime officials,
-exile to a "friendly" country within the Western Hemisphere.
The latter became the hot spot of the debate. Trump suggested that Maduro go to Russia or China, while the Venezuelan president steadfastly refused, insisting that he wanted to stay closer to Venezuela. The negotiations began to fall apart right there.
Witnesses to the negotiations have described Maduro's demands as a "salvation price" to ensure full protection for his inner circle - a red line that Washington was unwilling to cross.
After the failure of the talks, Qatar emerged as a compromise option for his possible asylum, due to its good relations with both the US and the Venezuelan regime.
In the background is the ongoing international pressure for a political transition in Venezuela, while the failed talks show that Maduro is still willing to negotiate, but only by imposing strong conditions that the West does not accept.
