NATO reorganizes commands: US takes over Alliance's naval command

NATO is expected to implement operational changes to its command structure, as part of the redistribution of responsibilities between the United States and European allies.

According to diplomatic sources, the US will hand over two current commands to European partners. The command of the Southern Wing General Staff, based in Naples, will pass to Italy. Meanwhile, the Joint Force Command (JFC) in Norfolk, Virginia, responsible for the Northern Wing, will pass to Great Britain.

The third operational headquarters, the one in Brunssum, Netherlands, which covers NATO's Eastern Wing, continues to be led by a German officer.

In exchange for these changes, the US will take over NATO's unified maritime command (MARCOM), headquartered in Northwood, UK. This command plays a key role in coordinating the Alliance's maritime operations.

The changes are expected to take effect within months, according to two NATO diplomats. The reorganization comes at a time when Washington has been pushing European allies to take more responsibility for the continent's security and defense.
