Over 220 dead since Ebola outbreak in Congo, WHO raises alarm: We cannot isolate

The World Health Organization has warned that ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo is seriously hampering the response to the Ebola outbreak in the east of the country.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the region is facing a "catastrophic collision between disease and conflict," as the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province is spreading faster than the pace of the humanitarian and health response.

"We can't build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling," he said in X.

He is expected to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo to lead the escalation of efforts to contain the virus. According to preliminary data, around 220 deaths are suspected to have been recorded since the epidemic was declared.

Humanitarian workers are facing great difficulties on the ground, as movement is limited due to the poor condition of the roads, while armed conflicts and massive population displacements have further weakened the country's health system.

The situation has also been worsened by cuts in international aid.

Ituri province has been under military administration since 2021, when civilian authorities were replaced by military leadership, in an attempt to curb the activity of dozens of armed groups operating in the region.

Tedros stressed that stopping the spread of the virus in the area "depends entirely on a humanitarian approach."
