Macron begins his trip to Beijing, here are the issues he will discuss with Xi

French President Emmanuel Macron began his fourth official visit to China today, at a time of heightened tensions with Beijing, from the war in Ukraine to large trade imbalances in favor of the Asian giant.

The French president's plane, which landed shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time in Beijing, will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People tomorrow.
The two leaders will meet again on Friday in Chengdu, in southwestern Sichuan province, for a more informal meeting.

Macron, accompanied by his wife Brigitte, was received by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

"Thank you very much for your presence tonight and for all the work we will do together," he declared during the reception.

In the capital, he will have a private program, including a visit to the recently restored "Garden of Emperor Qianlong" in the Forbidden City, followed by an official dinner.
The French President will be accompanied by six ministers (Foreign Affairs, Economy, Agriculture, Environment, Higher Education and Culture) as well as 35 executives from major corporations (Airbus, EDF, Danone, etc.) or family-owned companies, ranging from the luxury industry to agri-food products.

"Our goal, and this will be the focus of the strategic talks with President Xi Jinping, is for Europe to be treated with respect as a major partner of China," the Elysee Palace stressed before the visit.

Macron will again ask Xi Jinping to exert his influence on Russia, China's strategic partner, to persuade it to accept a ceasefire. Although Beijing calls for peaceful negotiations, it has never condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and opposes sanctions against it.

China continues to import hydrocarbons from Russia, while the EU agreed today to stop imports of Russian gas from the fall of 2027, with the aim of depriving Moscow of an important source of financing the war in Ukraine.
