Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announces the creation of the new political party "ELAS"

Former Greek Prime Minister and former leader of the SYRIZA party, Alexis Tsipras, presented his new political formation named "ELAS" yesterday evening in Athens, during a public event held near the Acropolis, AMNA reported.
According to statements, the name ELAS stands for "Greek Left Coalition", while the announcement of the new party was met with applause and cheers from hundreds of supporters present.
In his inaugural speech, Tsipras stressed the need for "more honesty and democracy" in the country's political life and called on citizens in Greece and the Greek diaspora to support the initiative by signing the party's founding charter.
With the Acropolis as the symbolic backdrop of the event, the leader of ELAS presented the seven main commitments of the party's founding program.
The first point is related to guaranteeing a "life with dignity" for citizens.
The second commitment envisages strengthening democracy, transparency and institutional control at all levels of government and the administration of public funds.
On the economic front, Tsipras promised a new development model, with a focus on agricultural production and manufacturing industry, emphasizing the need for "fair economic growth and social dignity."
ELAS's program also includes strengthening the welfare state and protecting rights in health, education, housing, social protection and culture, opposing, according to it, "privileges for the minority".
In the field of security and global crises, Tsipras stated that the party aims for a more stable Greece, in the face of energy insecurity and the consequences of climate change.
Another pillar of the program is related to "democracy and digital sovereignty", through the creation of a national technological infrastructure with sovereignty clauses.
In foreign policy, ELAS aims to build a "strong Greece that defends its rights and builds bridges of peace", promoting a return to a multidimensional and active foreign policy.
During his speech, Tsipras declared that the new political declaration represents the beginning of "a new collective effort to create a grand progressive coalition," uniting three historical currents of the progressive camp: the radical left, social democracy, and political ecology.
Although SYRIZA and Nea Aristera MPs did not participate in the event, with the aim of avoiding the new party's direct connection with existing formations, several mid-level officials and parliamentary associates from both parties were present at the rally.
According to reports from the activity, the participants represented different age groups, with middle-aged and elderly supporters dominating, while young people were also present.
