Ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon enters into force, US-Iran talks could

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has come into effect, while US President Donald Trump said the next meeting with Iran could take place over the weekend, adding to optimism that the war may be nearing an end.

The ceasefire, announced a day earlier by President Trump, has been confirmed by Israeli and Lebanese authorities. The Iranian-backed group Hezbollah recognized the agreement without explicitly declaring its adherence to it, adding that its actions would depend on developments on the ground.

According to the US State Department, Israel will retain the right to self-defense but will suspend offensive operations, while the Lebanese government must take measures to prevent attacks against Israeli targets.

Iran welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon, saying it was part of an understanding reached with the United States and brokered by Pakistan, Iranian media reported, citing a statement from a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

If the ceasefire in Lebanon paves the way for a broader peace deal with Iran, it would be a significant victory for the Trump administration, which has so far struggled to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and block Iran's path to a nuclear weapon.

The conflict between Israel and the Iranian-aligned Lebanese group Hezbollah was reignited by the US-Israeli war with Iran. Hezbollah opened fire in support of Tehran on March 2, prompting an Israeli offensive in Lebanon 15 months after their last major conflict.
