Britain and France hold security conference in the Strait of Hormuz, Paris: It must be reopened, but not at any cost
Britain and France are expected to hold a joint summit to discuss setting up a naval force aimed at guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transport routes.
The "Freedom of Navigation Initiative" will have a strictly defensive character, according to London's statement. European leaders do not intend to get involved in operations to reopen the strait, as US President Donald Trump has called for.
Meanwhile, French Economy Minister Roland Leskier stressed that the Strait should be fully reopened, but "not at any price," rejecting the idea of paying transit fees.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil and gas passes, has become the epicenter of the current crisis. Iran has de facto blocked the passage since the start of the war with the US and Israel on February 28, imposing tariffs on shipping.
